November 16, 2013 — Denver, CO Spreading Wings Gala

Wings Over The Rockies

This year's Wings Over the Rockies Museum Annual Gala, Creatures of the Cosmos, was one of the best ever Spreading Wings Galas at the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum. The event was a night to remember for all who cherish Colorado’s heritage and future in space. Unfortunately Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin was battling a severe flu and infection, and his doctors advised him not to travel to attend the Spreading Wings Gala. Buzz is an 83-year-old national treasure, and we wish him a full and speedy recovery While Buzz Aldrin was not in attendance, there were still many wonderful aspects of the evening everyone enjoyed.

• Mingling with nearly 700 aerospace executives, engineers and enthusiasts to celebrate and sustain a legacy of leadership for America’s destiny in space.

• Space Foundation CEO Elliot Pulham interacted with Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, one of America’s most celebrated visionaries. Dr. Tyson was amazing on live video from New York with thought-provoking commentary on our need to keep reaching for the stars.

• A moving aerospace community tribute, honoring Scott Carpenter and wishing “Godspeed” to Colorado’s own Mercury astronaut was presented.

• A new major exhibit on the International Space Station and NASA’s HL-20 Personnel Launch System was unveiled among more than 10,000 square feet of new Museum exhibitions.

• Metropolitan State University of Denver intern presented their orbital dynamics’ flight profiles for Apollo 11 and other past and future spaceflights.

• Amazing live auction items were sold—from a ULA launch at Cape Canaveral—to incredible aviation adventure trips including aerobatic flights with world champions Sean Tucker and Patty Wagstaff.
